Valentines Day is celebrated every year on the 14th February and is when we celebrate love and romance. This can be through buying gifts such as chocolates, trips away, flowers and more importantly spoiling our other halves with beautiful jewellery! With it being the day of celebrating love, it is also one of most popular times of year to propose!
When was the first Valentines Day?
Believe it or not, the first recorded Valentines Day in its more familiar format was in 496 A.D! However Valentines Day origins go back as far as the Romans, who believed February was the month of romantic love, So much so they created a festival to celebrate. This festival involved drawing names from a box during the celebrations, whomever you picked would be your partner during the festival, sometimes they'd even get married! One of the more interesting Valentines Day facts is that the day itself is named after St Valentine, whose identity is still an area of contention to this day!
Who was St Valentine?
With the name Valentine originating from the Latin word “Valentinus” meaning worthy and strong, you can see that it would be a popular name! Therefore, there have been many notable people in history who have gone by the name Valentine. However, the two leading candidates are a temple priest of Rome and a Bishop of Terni, both martyred by Claudius II. Despite this his name has helped shape a fantastic celebration of love and romance.
